Donald Glover’s next project has been revealed.
The “Atlanta” star is teaming up with Phoebe Waller-Bridge of “Fleabag” fame to create and star in a series based on the 2005 movie Mr. & Mrs. Smith.
Glover took to his Instagram story on Friday to announce that the series is coming to Amazon Prime Video in 2022. The teaser clip, inspired by the #SilhouetteChallenge, opens with Glover dancing to 24kGoldn’s “Mood” before cutting to Waller-Bridge in her bedroom as Doja Cat’s “Streets” begins to play.
Mr. & Mrs. Smith is a reboot of the 2005 action-comedy film starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, which grossed $487 million worldwide. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the series has quietly been in the works for months and stems from Waller-Bridge’s overall deal with Amazon.
Francesca Sloane (“Atlanta,” “Fargo”) co-created the series and will serve as showrunner. New Regency’s Yariv Milchan and Michael Schaefer will executive produce, along with Jenny Robins of Wells Street Films.
Glover previously worked with Amazon Studios on Guava Island, his 2019 musical film co-starring Rihanna.
The Emmy-winning actor-rapper, whose surprise album 3.15.20 was released nearly a year ago, is also gearing up for seasons three and four of “Atlanta.” The FX series is expected to resume production early this year after the pandemic forced its delay.
