Report: Dawson Odums to be named Norfolk State head coach

Southern is losing one of the program’s most successful head coaches to the MEAC.

Dawson Odums, who spent the last nine seasons at Southern, is expected to be named the next head at Norfolk State, according to various reports and confirmed by HBCU Sports.

Odums is coming off a 2021 spring season where he helped lead Southern to a 5-1 record, including a 49-7 win over Grambling in the Bayou Classic.

During his tenure at Southern, Odums guided the Jaguars to four SWAC West division championships, four conference title game appearances and one SWAC crown in 2013 after assuming the role from then-head coach Stump Mitchell in 2012.

Odums will replace Latrell Scott, who resigned at Norfolk State in March to take an assistant position at East Carolina.

Scott was named head coach at Norfolk State in 2014 and compiled a 21-35 record with the Spartans in five seasons.

Odums will return to the MEAC after spending several years in the league as an assistant at Bethune-Cookman from 2005-2007 and North Carolina A&T from 2008-2010.

He had a career 64-32 overall record at Southern and 54-16 record in the SWAC.
