Southern athletic director confirms Faulk interest; eyes week’s end to name new coach

Southern athletic director Roman Banks reaffirmed that his goal was to name the school’s next head football coach as soon as this week.

He also confirmed that schools did have conversations with former NFL great Marshall Faulk about the opening.

In an interview with WAFB Channel 9 sports reporter Jacques Doucet, Banks said more than 15 candidates have been interviewed or contacted so far, including Faulk.

NFL Network senior reporter Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday that Southern and Marshall Faulk had “mutual interest” in the job.

However, a deal with any potential hire has not been finalized, though Banks indicated that an “end of the week” timetable to name a replacement for Dawson Odums is likely.

“This needs to be done in a timely manner,” he said. “I think by the end of this week is my goal.”
