'Lovecraft Country' And 'Underground' Creator Misha Green Inks Overall Deal At Apple

Lovecraft Country creator Misha Green has bounced back after HBO decided to forego a season 2 of the show. Fans can look for her to keep creating new stories at Apple.

According to Variety, Green has signed a multi-year overall deal with Apple where she will create and develop shows for Apple+. The news comes days after HBO announced Lovecraft Country‘s season 2 plans wouldn’t go forward.

“We are grateful for the dedication and artistry of the gifted cast and crew, and to Misha Green, who crafted this groundbreaking series,” said HBO in a statement regarding its decision to cancel the show. “And to the fans, thank you for joining us on this journey.”

Green has also revealed some of the plans she had for the second season, including introducing an alternate view of America, now broken up into different territories called the New Negro Republic, the Jefferson Commonwealth, the Whitelands (where zombies reside) and the Tribal Nations of the West. The second season would have been called Lovecraft Country: Supremacy.

Green has proven herself as an innovative writer via co-creating WGN America’s Underground. In fact, the new Apple deal reunites her with Jamie Erlicht, Zack Van Amberg and Matt Cherniss. According to Variety, Van Amburg and Erlicht were over Sony Pictures Television during Underground‘s run before becoming the worldwide video executives for Apple. Cherniss was WGN America and Tribune Studios’ president and general manager before heading to Apple as its head of programming.

But fans would also be cognizant of the amount of controversy Lovecraft Country has courted. Many fans called the series out for mishandling a Native American, non-binary storyline and for having an instance of blackface on set.

“This should not have happened, and we are taking steps to ensure this doesn’t occur again in the future,” HBO told The Hollywood Reporter in a statement in March.
