Alabama State finalizes lucrative Magic City Classic deal

Alabama State is expected to make a pretty penny from its partnership with the Magic City Classic.

The school on Thursday signed an exclusive agreement with the Alabama Sports Council — the non-profit organization that oversees operations of the event — that will provide the program $1.5 million for the 2023 and 2025 Classics, AL.com reported.

During those seasons, the newspaper said, Alabama State will be the home team for the games played at Legion Field.

Alabama State and Alabama A&M are each expected to receive $500,000 from the City of Birmingham through 2026 as part of a four-year contractual agreement.

According to the agreement, ASU, in addition to what it gets from the city, will receive $1 million in 2023 and 2025 from ASC, which includes $970,000 and an additional $30,000 for travel costs.

In those years, Alabama A&M will take home only the dollars it receives from the city.

In Magic City Classic games played during the 2024 and 2026 seasons, Alabama A&M will be the home team. In those years, each school will receive only the $500,000 from the city.
