Diamond Johnson named semifinalist for Mid-Major Player of the Year

Norfolk State guard Diamond Johnson has been announced as one of 10 semifinalists for the Becky Hammon Mid Major Player of the Year award.

Johnson is in her first season at Norfolk State, transferring to the team from North Carolina State.

After being forced to miss the first 10 games of the season due to an eligibility issue as a non-graduate multi-transfer, a Judge granted her and similar transfers a waiver in December.

Johnson is averaging 20.6 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 4.1 steals through 12 games with the Spartans. The team has a 10-2 record with her in the lineup, including a 6-1 record against the MEAC.

She and teammate Kierra Wheeler were featured on the award’s preseason watch list and the midseason watch list.

In its five-year existence, the Spartans guard is looking to become the first HBCU player to win the Becky Hammon Mid Major Player of the Year award.
