Johnson C. Smith losing top running back to transfer portal

Coming off a breakout year in which they finished with a winning record for the first time since 2006, the Johnson C. Smith Golden Bulls are on the verge of losing a major piece of its offense.

Running back Jacob Newman has announced that he is entering the transfer portal with two years remaining eligibility.

Newman joined the Golden Bulls in 2022, making an immediate impact with the team being named to the CIAA’s All-Rookie team.

He ended the year with 476 rushing yards, averaging 5.2 yards per carry, and scoring seven touchdowns (tied for third in CIAA). He also caught six passes for 60 yards and returned six kickoffs for 93 yards.

This past year, his numbers slightly dipped as he split carries with his brother Tim Newman Jr. Both men finished with over 400 yards and combined for five touchdowns.
