SIAC football teams to play in HBCU Classic named after Frederick Douglass

One SIAC football battle will be moved to a neutral location for a new classic honoring an American hero.

Albany State and Central State’s Sept. 21 showdown will now be played in Rochester, New York, as the Golden Rams announced Thursday the two teams will compete in the Inaugural Frederick Douglass HBCU Football Classic.

“This is an incredible opportunity for our student-athletes and the entire Albany State community,” Albany State athletic director Dr. Kristene Kelly said in a statement released by the university. “Participating in such an event not only showcases our football team but also reinforces our commitment to excellence and tradition in HBCU athletics. It’s a perfect example of #CreatingLegacies.”

The Rams, led by former Florida A&M and Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Quinn Gray Sr., went 6-5, 6-2 in conference play in 2023, advancing to the SIAC championship game, where they lost 47-10 to Benedict College.

Under the guidance of second-year head coach Kevin Porter, The Marauders were a surprise team in 2023, finishing 5-5 (4-4 SIAC) for their best record since 2018.

Albany State is the preseason favorite to win the SIAC, while Central State was selected ninth.
