*Not wasting any time, Kamala Harris‘ presidential campaign has responded vehemently to GOP nominee Donald Trump’s controversial statements made at the National Association of Black Journalists/NABJ convention in Chicago on Wednesday. During the event, Trump questioned Vice President Harris’ identity as a Black woman, igniting immediate backlash from her campaign.

Harris’ campaign labeled Trump’s comments as “simply a taste of the chaos and division” that they believe exemplifies his political strategy and portends what Americans can expect from another Trump administration.

Michael Tyler, Harris’ campaign communications director, articulated the campaign’s stance in a Wednesday press statement.

“The hostility Donald Trump showed onstage today is the same hostility he has shown throughout his life, throughout his term in office and throughout his campaign for president as he seeks to regain power and inflict his harmful Project 2025 agenda on the American people.”

“Trump lobbed personal attacks and insults at Black journalists the same way he did throughout his presidency — while he failed Black families and left the entire country digging out of the ditch he left us in. Donald Trump has already proven he cannot unite America, so he attempts to divide us,” Tyler continued addressing Trump’s consistent track record of sowing division, particularly among Black communities.

The incident at the NABJ convention took a chaotic turn as Trump’s statements sparked anger and confusion. In a segment of his remarks that drew widespread criticism, Trump questioned Harris’ racial identity.

“She was always of Indian heritage, and she was only promoting Indian heritage,” Trump said during his appearance.

He then added: “I didn’t know she was Black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn Black, and now she wants to be known as Black. So I don’t know, is she Indian or is she Black?”

Trump’s skewed rhetoric failed to heed the facts of Harris’ heritage—she is both Jamaican and Indian and holds the significant distinctions of being the first Black woman and the first Asian American to serve as vice president as well as to run for the presidency.

Tyler emphasized that Wednesday’s speech is indicative of Trump’s overall campaign approach characterized by controversy and misinformation.

“Today’s tirade is simply a taste of the chaos and division that has been a hallmark of Trump’s MAGA rallies this entire campaign,” Tyler remarked. “It’s also exactly what the American people will see from across the debate stage as Vice President Harris offers a vision of opportunity and freedom for all Americans. All Donald Trump needs to do is stop playing games and actually show up to the debate on Sept. 10.”

Trump’s participation at the NABJ confab at the Chicago Hilton, intended to be a live Q&A session with Black journalists, was marred from the outset. Starting over an hour late, the event was disrupted by shouts, boos, and the candidate’s own presentation of several disputed claims about his policies and actions toward Black communities.

Ultimately, the session was cut short by his campaign staff, leaving attendees bewildered and angered by what many perceived as a blatant attempt to muddy Harris’ heritage for political gain.

With the campaign season heating up, Harris’ team underscores their determination to highlight the stark contrast between her policies and the divisiveness promoted by Trump. Making her own heritage and community connections clear, they aim to unify voters around a vision of inclusivity and progress, standing against the backdrop of divisive rhetoric showcased in Trump’s recent public appearances.
