*Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, advises that those concerned about AI taking their jobs should focus on mastering the technology. He suggests high school and college students prepare for the future by learning how to effectively use AI.
“You want to get really comfortable with these new tools because we don’t know exactly what the jobs of the future are going to look like,” Altman explained to Indeed CEO Chris Hyams, as part of an Indeed conference in Dallas on Thursday, per Business Insider.
“I’m confident that there will be lots of jobs and also that many of them will look somewhat different today, but we never seem to run out of stuff to do,” he said.
OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, is reportedly restructuring into a for-profit business, potentially making Altman billions richer. His latest remarks suggest that he believes AI will offer more advantages than drawbacks, much like the impact of computer software.
“The story on computer programming has been a huge net positive. It has made some classes of jobs go away. It’s made way more new things happen and also given us the ability to do a lot of new things,” Altman said.
Altman compared AI to the invention of the camera, which initially raised fears that photography would make painting and other art forms obsolete. Over time, however, artists embraced it as an “incredible new tool.”
“I think we’re going to see the same thing happen here,” he told Hyams.
“It’s always tempting to call at the end of creativity. It will not happen. I don’t believe it will happen,” he said.
Altman expressed enthusiasm for the day when AI might surpass his own capabilities.
“I think it’ll be awesome when AI can do my job better, but I’ve been doing it for a while, and, you know, I got to have the fun part.”
