*JAY-Z’s Roc Nation will continue to oversee the Super Bowl Halftime Show entertainment, as the NFL has chosen to extend their partnership.
According to Bloomberg, this collaboration, which began in 2019 under a five-year, $25 million agreement, allows Roc Nation to book all headlining acts for the Halftime Show.
“It’s been a mutually positive relationship,” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said about Roc Nation and its chief executive officer, Desiree Perez during a meeting with NFL owners in Atlanta. “I’m not sure either one of us really spend much time talking about contracts. Jay is happy. Desiree Perez is happy. I’m happy, so we’re all good.”
JAY-Z and Roc Nation’s involvement in the Super Bowl Halftime Show has significantly boosted viewership numbers. The 2022 show in Los Angeles, featuring artists like Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Kendrick Lamar, and Mary J. Blige, attracted 103.4 million viewers. Rihanna’s performance in 2023 became one of the most-watched Halftime Shows ever, with 118.7 million viewers tuning in.
Kendrick Lamar is set to headline the 2025 Super Bowl in New Orleans, but fans believe hometown hero Lil Wayne deserved the performance spot.
The Super Bowl LIX halftime show in New Orleans will go down on February 9, 2025. We reported earlier that rappers Nicki Minaj, Lil Boosie, and Master P are among those who believe a local artist should have been the headliner for the show. In a statement shared on social media, Master P wrote, “Salute to @kendricklamar for performing at the halftime show at Super Bowl LIX… well deserved, he’s one of the hottest music artists in the world and has one of the biggest songs right now.”
He added, “As Ambassador of Entertainment in the City of New Orleans, I have to agree with the fans that @liltunechi #LilWayne should be a part of this celebration as well. He’s one of the greatest Hip Hop artists alive, still relevant, and he’s a New Orleans native.”
Lil Wayne reacted to being passed over for the halftime show.
“That hurt. It hurt a lot. You know what I’m talking about. It hurt a whole lot,” the rapper said.
“I blame myself for not being mentally prepared for a letdown. And for automatically mentally putting myself in that position like somebody told me that was my position. So I blame myself for that,” Weezy continued.
