*New York State has stepped into the music industry spotlight by securing a one-third ownership stake in Roc-A-Fella Records, the legendary hip-hop label co-founded by Jay-Z and Damon Dash.

“The auction is over but the work is not complete,” stated Chris Brown, an attorney representing two plaintiffs to whom Dash allegedly owes money. “Mr. Dash’s legacy is now New York State property. I will work with New York State and New York City as the next phase of ownership of the shares.”

Damon Dash’s financial troubles have put him in the public eye for years, and he was previously listed as the 27th most tax-delinquent resident of New York State. Added pressure came earlier this year when Jay-Z attempted to assert his claim to the copyrights of his first album, “Reasonable Doubt,” saying ownership would revert to him in 2031. However, New York City countered this claim, stating such assertions could hinder the auction’s effectiveness in generating funds to satisfy Dash’s outstanding debts.
Natraj Bhushan, Dash’s lawyer, expressed surprise at Jay-Z’s absence from the auction, especially given the stakes involved.
“I think it’s surprising not to see Mr. Carter here bidding on a one-third interest. Now he has the government involved in his affairs,” Bhushan commented, highlighting the unexpected twists in this ongoing saga.
