Bethune-Cookman 82, Coppin State 51

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Amaya Scott’s 17 points led the way on Saturday afternoon in historic Moore Gym as Bethune-Cookman upended Coppin State 82-51 to improve to 2-1 in MEAC play.

The Wildcats also improved to 10-5 overall on the season.

Camary Harris added 12 points for B-CU, while Ashanti Hunt added 10 points. Ashlie Howell had the team lead in rebounds with 11.

Control was immediate for the Wildcats, who led 28-11 after the first 10 minutes. B-CU then scored 18 points each in the second, third and fourth quarters, and the Wildcats held Coppin State to just eight points in the fourth quarter.

Jalynda Salley had 15 points and 11 rebounds for Coppin State (0-15, 0-3 MEAC). Chance Graham added 10 points and 18 boards.

Delaware State 64, North Carolina Central 54

DOVER, Del. — Lyric Turner had 24 points off the bench to lead three Hornets in double figures as Delaware State remained unbeaten in MEAC play with a 64-54 win over North Carolina Central in Memorial Hall Gym on Saturday.

Janasia Law added 14 points and Sharajah Collins had 11 for the Hornets (6-9, 2-0 MEAC).

North Carolina Central held a 45-44 lead after three-quarters of play, but the Hornets came out strong in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Eagles 20-9 in the final frame. In fact, NCCU led 52-48 with 5:04 to play, before the Hornets closed the game on a 16-2 run.

Anissa Rivera led the Eagles (4-11, 1-1 MEAC) with 23 points and 10 rebounds.

Morgan State 59, Florida A&M 47

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Chelsea Mitchell recorded yet another double-double — with 11 points and a team-high 13 rebounds — as Morgan State picked up a 59-47 win over Florida A&M on Saturday at the Al Lawson Center.

Mitchell has a MEAC-best seven double-doubles on the season.

Lana Skripkina led the lady Bears (6-10, 2-1 MEAC) with 15 points. Dahnye Redd added eight points and 10 rebounds.

FAMU held the lead after the first quarter, but Morgan State held the Rattlers to just four points in the second quarter to take a 29-24 lead into the halftime break. That continued into the third quarter, where Florida A&M scored just nine points and the Lady Bears led 48-33.

The Rattlers outscored Morgan State 14-11 in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough.

Shalaunda Burney-Robinson led the Rattlers (2-12, 0-3 MEAC) with 18 points.

Norfolk State 83, Howard 80

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Norfolk State defeated the Howard Bison 83-80, in a fast-paced game at the Burr Gymnasium in Washington D.C. on Saturday afternoon.

Down 48-40 at halftime in a high-scoring first half, the Spartans (9-7, 3-0 MEAC) started clicking on both sides of the floor in the third quarter, scoring 23 points and holding the Bison (9-7, 1-2 MEAC) to just nine Chanette Hicks single-handedly brought the Spartans back to start the second half, snagging five of her nine steals in the third quarter.

The Spartans had eight of their 15 steals in the third quarter, scoring 12 of their 33 points off turnovers.

The Spartans entered the final quarter up 63-57 and started the period on a 6-2 run that built the Spartans’ largest lead at 69-59 following a Hicks’ jumper with 7:23 remaining in the game. The Bison refused to go down, retaking a 74-73 lead with 3:35 left after an Ayonna Williams three-pointer. The Spartans would get the lead back on the next possession, after another Hicks’ jumper with 2:06 left in regulation. The Bison were forced to foul late, with Armani Franklin hitting two clutch free-throws in the last 10 seconds of the game to make the score 83-80.

The Bison had one more chance to tie the game and send it to overtime, but Ayonna Williams could not come in the clutch as the Spartans held on for the lead.

Both teams were trading baskets in the first quarter, setting the tone for the game that had a track-meet feel with both teams running the floor in transition. The Bison were able to open up a slight lead in the second quarter, outscoring the Spartans 29-21 in the period and setting up the Spartans’ second-half comeback.

Hicks led the Spartans with 30 points, her third 30-point game of the season. She also had five rebounds, seven assists, nine steals, and two blocks. La’Deja James scored 24 points in the contest, providing a 3-point threat for the Spartans by shooting 4-for-7 from behind the arc.

James also had three rebounds, three assists and two steals in the game.

North Carolina A&T State 67, Maryland Eastern Shore 31

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. — Five players scored in double figures for North Carolina A&T State on Saturday, as the Aggies picked up a 67-31 win over Maryland Eastern Shore at the W.P. Hytche Athletic Center.

The Aggies (10-4, 2-0 MEAC) got 15 points from Deja Winters, while Cinia McCray added a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Jasmen Walton added 11 points, while C’coriea Foy and Jayla Jones-Pack both had 10 points.

Jones-Pack also pulled down a team-high 12 boards for a double-double.

NCAT held the Hawks (3-12, 0-2 MEAC) to just 20.8 percent shooting from the floor, 15.0 percent from 3-point range and 36.4 percent at the free-throw line. The Aggies also held a 56-27 edge on the glass, including a 19-8 advantage in offensive rebounds.

Mya Thomas led UMES with seven points.
