With the entire sports world coming to a screeching halt due to the coronavirus outbreak, especially with the cancellation of the MEAC, SWAC and NCAA basketball tournaments, we are left asking a host of questions that begin with, “What if,” relating to our HBCU basketball programs.
However, in previous years there were four historical moments when HBCU teams became the darlings of the NCAA Division I basketball tournament by upsetting the basketball behemoths they faced.
Those four moments were:
In 1993, when No. 13 Southern upset No. 4 Georgia Tech, 78-65.
In 1997, when No. 15 Coppin State upset No. 2 South Carolina, 93-78.
In 2001 when No. 15 Hampton upset No. 2 Iowa State, 58-57.
In 2012 when No. 15 Norfolk State defeated No. 2 Missouri, 86-84.
Each event listed was unique and momentous in its own right, but which of the four games do you believe was the greatest upset of them all?
