The weeklong cultural celebration which honors family, friends and community, has been observed by millions of Black Americans since its founding in 1966. The holiday spans from December 26 through January 1 and is premised on seven core principles: Umoja (Unity), Kujichagulia (Self-Determination), Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility), Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics), Nia (Purpose), Kuumba (Creativity), and Imani (Faith).
