Alabama State football coach Donald Hill-Eley tests positive for COVID-19, will miss start of preseason camp

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Alabama State head football coach Donald Hill-Eley will miss the start of preseason camp due to a positive COVID-19 test, the school announced Saturday.

Upon returning from the holiday break and in accordance with standard University and Athletic Department COVID-19 testing protocols after a positive test result, Eley has followed the University’s isolation protocols.

Eley has not been in physical contact with players or his staff since returning from the holiday break.

Director of Football Operations, Joe Wright, will handle all off the field operations for camp that begins January 29, and Benton Harold will serve as the acting head coach on the field.

This is not the first time a head coach of the Alabama State athletics department has tested positive for COVID-19.

On January 4, the school announced that men’s head basketball coach Mo Williams tested positive for the coronavirus, followed up with an announcement a few days later that women’s head basketball coach Freda Freeman-Jackson tested positive for the virus as well.

Alabama State’s first spring football game is scheduled for February 26 against Southern in Montgomery.
