Albany State home opener against Shaw re-scheduled

It has been nearly 313 days since the Albany State University football team played a home game.

The Golden Rams will have to wait a little longer in the fall.

Albany State was set to meet  Shaw University in the Golden Rams’ home opener, but the game — which was initially scheduled for Sept. 5 — has now been postponed until Sept. 7. Despite the date change, the kickoff time, which was initially set for 6 p.m. EST, will remain intact.

“As members of the HBCU community, it is important for us to support each other during times of need,” said Director of Athletics Dr. Kristene Kelly. “We are pleased to accommodate Shaw University’s request and look forward to hosting the Bears on September 7th.”

According to Albany State, the impetus for the change was the announcement that Saint Augustine’s University would not be fielding a football team in 2024, necessitating several institutions to have to make alterations to their respective schedules.

Albany State head coach Quinn Gray supported the schedule change.

“We’re ready to hit the field on September 7th and show what Albany State football is all about.”
