Barack Obama gave listeners a deeper look into his childhood and people were surprised to learn just how rough the former president could get on the blacktop.
In the latest episode of Renegades: Born in the USA, a new Spotify podcast co-hosted by Bruce Springsteen and Obama, the 59-year-old recalls a high school memory that left his friend with a broken nose after calling him a racial slur.
“Listen, when I was in school, I had a friend,” he said. “We played basketball together. And one time we got into a fight, and he called me a c–n. Now, first of all, ain’t no c–ns in Hawaii, right? It’s one of those things where he might not even have known what a c–n was. What he knew was, ‘I can hurt you by saying this.’”
“I remember I popped him in the face and broke his nose and we were in the locker room,” Obama said with a laugh.
After punching his friend, the author told him that he may be “poor” and “ignorant” amongst a list of other characteristics but at least he’s not him.
“‘I may be poor. I may be ignorant. I may be mean. I may be ugly. I may not like myself. I may be unhappy. But you know what I’m not?’” Obama said to the “Born in the U.S.A” singer. “‘I’m not you.’”
The podcast launched on Monday (Feb. 22) to the audio streaming platform but the series was recorded last year in Springsteen’s home studio in New Jersey.
Renegades: Born in the USA is a part of Spotify’s latest deal to sign exclusive deals with high-profile figures from Meghan Markle and Prince Harry to Michelle Obama.
