Black Business Association Red Carpet - SaluteToBlackWomen

*Women’s History Month ended on a high in Los Angeles as the Black Business Association put on its annual Salute to Black Women conference.

With 20 years under its belt, the conference was stronger than ever this year as honorees included Mayor Karen Bass, Gina Prince-Bythewood, Beverly White, Pat Prescott, Regina Brown Wilson, Cynthia E. Exum, and Devyn Bakewell.

The event also featured many artists in attendance to help celebrate the event as well, including Kim Coles

Taking place at the Hyatt Regency International Los Angeles Airport Hotel, the 2023 Salute to Black Women Business Conference, Vendor Faire & Awards Luncheon highlighted Black women with its 2023 theme, “Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories.”

“The Black Business Association is a legacy organization,” the President of the BBA, Sarah Harris said. “It was founded in 1970 and it has served to work for the advancement of Black and diverse businesses.”

Harris also discussed how this year’s list of honorees came to be.

“Well this year the theme for Women’s History Month, because we do it in recognition of Women’s History Month, is Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories,” Harris said. “So of course Gina Prince-Bythewood is a no-brainer, right? I mean she came out with “The Woman King,” and it was like, that was it, you know? Also, to, because of the snub we felt like we wanted to make sure she got her just desserts. That was that. Then we have two retiring veterans, Pat Prescott, and Beverly White. They’re some phenomenal women that we have seen for years on the airwaves and so we wanted to honor them. We have Cynthia Exum who is the founder & CEO of the Leimert Park Book Fair she brings authors, and she brings the people who tell the stories together. So it’s just phenomenal in terms of what we are able to offer. One more person I could mention is Regina Brown Wilson, she’s over California Black Media. She is something else because she goes after the dollars to make it so that ethnic media can be able to have our part of the pie too.”

Director of “The Woman King” Prince-Bythewood, was also in attendance receiving The Pinnacle of Excellence Award.

“It’s always a beautiful thing to be honored for your work,” Prince-Bythewood said. “And that people see the value in your work. This is an organization I know fights the same way we do in terms of the importance of our voice and amplifying our voice. So again to be here and  amongst the other honorees is really special.”

Prince-Bythewood also spoke on the importance of celebrating other women.

“It’s a fight to be able to amplify your voice, to find people who value your voice,” Prince-Bythewood said. “So to be in rooms like this, where it’s us celebrating each other, bigging up each other like that’s what you need sometimes to just fuel you to go back in and fight again.”

Actress Kim Coles who was also in attendance also shared her perspective on supporting other women in honor of Women’s History Month.

“I’m really grateful that I get to be in the room with women who are doing amazing things,” Coles said. “I get to be inspired and get to be reminded to keep the fire stoked in myself as well.”
