Anthony Mackie has finalized a deal to star in Marvel’s Captain America 4. More than likely, this will be the first movie Mackie will star in as the next Captain America after the events of Avengers: Endgame.
According to Deadline, details about the film are being firmly kept a secret, including any possible involvement Sebastian Stan, who played Steve Rogers’ friend Bucky, aka the Winter Soldier, might have in the film. Stan last starred as Bucky in the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier opposite Mackie.
Malcolm Spellman, who served as head writer for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, will write the script for the film with The Falcon and the Winter Soldier staff writer Dalan Musson. Spellman signed on to the film in April. Currently, no director has been attached to the film.
Shadow And Act reported that according to The Hollywood Reporter, the film will “likely continue the story of Sam Wilson…and the current weilder of the shield,” adding that “it will be interesting to see how the story unfolds with there now being multiple people who have been Captain Americas in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.”
Seeing how Spellman focused heavily on race in America in his Disney+ series, it’s worth pondering if Captain America 4 will continue the thread of analyzing race, especially since race relations factors heavily into Sam Wilson’s relationship with the Captain America mantle.
With the multiverse now open after the events of Loki, it’s also worth wondering if any of the What If storylines will come into play, such as Peggy Carter becoming Captain Carter and bearing a version of the Captain America shield (except with the Union Jack instead of the American flag).
