Cast of ‘Soul Food’ Celebrate 27th Anniversary, Reunite on ‘GMA3’ | Watch

*The “Soul Food” cast reunited to show their support during Black History Month while celebrating its 27th anniversary this year since the movie premiered on September 26, 1997.

“Soul Food” is now streaming on Hulu as part of Hulu’s “Black Stories Always” campaign.

Per the press release: As part of Hulu’s “Black Stories Always” campaign, explore our extensive film and TV content showcasing talents of Black creators. Titles include FX’s “Snowfall,” Andscape’s “Cypher,” Onyx Collective’s “Reasonable Doubt,” fan-favorites including “The Bernie Mac Show,” “My Wife and Kids,” “The Wonder Years,” the beloved film “Soul Food” and many more. This year marks the iconic anniversaries of “Family Matters” (35 years), “Sister, Sister” (30 years) and “Black-ish” (10 years), as well as the 10th anniversary of the Academy Award-winning film “12 Years A Slave.”

“Soul Food” centers on Ahmad Simmons’ (Brandon Hammond) and diabetic grandmother, Josephine “Big Mama” Joseph (Irma P. Hall), who falls into a coma during an operation to amputate her leg. The situation throws the Joseph family into chaos. Ahmad watches as his mother, Maxine (Vivica A. Fox), and aunts Teri (Vanessa L. Williams) and Tracy (Nia Long) struggle to adjust to the family matriarch’s sudden absence, fall into old rivalries, share memories, and work to maintain the long-standing tradition of Sunday family dinners, per the official synopsis.

The cast also included Mekhi Phifer and Michael Beach.

The movie earned $43 million at the box office against a $7 million budget.

In 2000, the film was adapted into a drama series aired on Showtime until 2004. The film, from director George Tillman Jr., was based on his childhood experiences growing up in Wisconsin.

Meanwhile, Williams, Fox, Phifer and Beach appeared on GMA3 to celebrate the film being part of Hulu’s “Black Stories Always” campaign. Host DeMarco Morgan asked Williams, “What does it feel like to be together now?”

The iconic actress/singer responded, “It’s fantastic.”
