Connell Maynor says he ‘wasn’t interviewing for anybody’ ahead of SWAC Championship Game

Connell Maynor wanted to set the record straight about his commitment to Alabama A&M.

Maynor, who currently is preparing the Bulldogs for an appearance in the SWAC Championship Game versus Arkansas-Pine Buff, reaffirmed that he is not focused on any other team in response to a report that he had an interest in the vacant head coach job at Southern.

“I’m focused on my team, not any other team,” Maynor said during a Zoom media availability ahead of the SWAC Championship Game. “We’ve been preparing to play in the SWAC championship since the day I walked on this campus. This is a special week for us.”

Maynor is in his third season at Alabama A&M and complied a 17-10 overall record and has gone 13-5 in the SWAC, denied interviewing at Southern last week.

“It’s championship week. The people that need to know — my players, my AD, my president — knew I wasn’t anywhere interviewing for anybody.” “First of all, if somebody was to contact me during championship week or during the season, if I were interested in that program, I would hear them talk to me after the game.”

The longtime HBCU head coach, who has had stints at Winston-Salem State and Hampton before arriving at Alabama A&M in 2018, said he — for now — only has Saturday’s game on his agenda.

“My administration here at A&M know my commitment,” he said. “They know the commitment of my staff and our student-athletes to serve our community and bring home a championship to A&M. This is our desire. This is our focus. Our commitment is steadfast. We’re about A&M and winning a championship this week.”
