Damon Wayans Shares His Struggle with Ongoing Pain of Living with Clubfoot | Video

*Damon Wayans recently discussed living with clubfoot during an interview on “CBS Sunday Mornings.”

The comedian shared that the birth defect causes him ongoing pain, saying: “I had operations, but still, it’s like I’m in pain. I just walk around with like a toothache in my foot. It’s a constant.”

According to the Mayo Clinic: “Clubfoot describes a condition present at birth in which a baby’s foot is pointed in and down. The tissues connecting the muscles to the bone are called tendons. In clubfoot, the tendons are shorter than usual, pulling the foot out of position.”

While the exact cause of clubfoot is unknown, the Mayo Clinic notes that there are ways to promote a healthy pregnancy and reduce the risk of developmental issues, including clubfoot. Pregnant individuals are advised to avoid smoking and secondhand smoke, refrain from drinking alcohol, and not use drugs or medications that haven’t been approved by a healthcare professional.

Damon said his “clubfoot has been a gift.”

“You learn to accept things. That’s another thing I practice. I accept everything, and I expect nothing,” he said on “CBS Sunday Mornings.”

“My brothers say that I’m not such the dark one, but I have a darker sense of humor than the rest of the family. Only because, you know, I was a walking joke,” he added.

Elsewhere in the interview, Damon promoted his new sitcom, “Poppa’s House,” co-starring Essence Atkins and Damon’s son, Damon Wayans Jr. The series premieres Monday, October 21 on CBS.

As described by CBS, “Poppa’s House” is about a “legendary talk radio host and happily divorced “Poppa” (Damon Wayans) [who] has his point of view challenged at work when a new female co-host is hired, and at home where he finds himself still parenting his adult son (Damon Wayans Jr.), a brilliant dreamer who is trying to pursue his passion while being a responsible father and husband.”
