Dawn Staley is searching for a non-conference opponent. An HBCU might be on the schedule.

Surprisingly, Dawn Staley has been looking for one final non-conference game for the defending NCAA Division I women’s basketball champion, South Carolina, for a few days now.

According to a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Tuesday afternoon, Staley may have found her team an opponent, and it might be an HBCU.

“When going to the peeps here on this app allows you to converse with great people and get options to complete schedules WINNING….we gotta game yall,” Staley posted. “Paperwork is not complete but we are good for it! I love my HBCUs!  Thank you all for reaching out! Love up!”

Staley has been an advocate of HBCUs in the past, most notably talking to Norfolk State’s team following their 2023 NCAA first-round match-up and treating the team to a Ruth’s Chris Steak Dinner.

Staley has also worn the jersey of Cheyney State legend Yolanda Laney, mother of WNBA standout Betnijah Laney, while coaching a game.
