*In a heated exchange reflecting the sharp divides within American politics, Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) strongly rebutted fellow Texas Republican Rep. Chip Roy‘s claim that Vice President Kamala Harris was merely a “diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) hire.”
This criticism from Roy, made during a Fox Business segment, resurfaced as he questioned Harris’s competency and suggested she might be positioned as a replacement candidate for President Joe Biden.
Appearing on MSNBC’s “ReidOut” on Monday, Crockett did not mince words. She described Roy as “ignorant as all get-out” and questioned his understanding of what constitutes a DEI hire.
“If you just listen to what they say, it will tell you everything that you need to know,” Crockett pointedly remarked. “Number one, you can obviously see that he’s ignorant as all get-out. Number two, you can see that he wishes he had half the competency of Vice President Kamala Harris.”
Crockett went further, criticizing Roy for his lack of engagement with genuine diversity, equity, and inclusion measures within his office: “Don’t talk to me about what a DEI hire looks like, because we know that you have never, ever engaged in diversity, equity or inclusion when it came to your office. So we know that you don’t know anything about hiring diversity,” she declared.

Crockett’s critique did not stop there. She slammed the broader Republican efforts to dismantle DEI initiatives, particularly targeting the governors of Texas and Florida. She urged Republicans to focus on creating policies that benefit all Americans, not just a select demographic.
“Instead of going after people because of how they look or how they were born, they need to focus on taking care of the American people, which means that you’re going to take care of people other than just white folk,” she added.
Rep. Roy has a history marked by controversial and inflammatory rhetoric. In 2021, he faced backlash for invoking a quote that glorified lynching during a hearing aimed at addressing a surge in anti-Asian violence. His office has also labeled efforts to educate children about systemic racism as “woke, racist indoctrination.” Earlier this year, Roy criticized Democrats for trying to “remake America” and “end Western civilization” with their immigration policies.
The backdrop of this clash is the upcoming 2024 Presidential election, where concerns about President Biden’s health and electoral viability have grown since a lackluster performance at the June 27 debate. With these concerns, there is speculation that Biden may step aside, positioning Vice President Harris as the likely successor for the Democratic nomination.
Crockett’s defense of Harris comes at a crucial time, as both factions within the Democratic Party and across the political aisle weigh in on potential leadership transitions. In her robust defense, Rep. Crockett not only highlighted Rep. Roy’s history of divisive rhetoric but also called on Republicans to focus on substantive policy-making instead of resorting to racial and identity-based attacks.
