*Forget about the Ouija board or a séance to contact the dead. Directors Danny & Michael Philippo’s twisted ghost story, “Talk to Me,” allow a bunch of teenage fools to visit the dark side by grasping the embalmed hand of a dead psychic, while strapped in a chair. Although the practice has proven deadly, sensation seekers become addicted to the thrill ride.
Seventeen-year-old Mia (Sophie Wilde) has had daddy issues ever since the death of her mother. So, she lives with her best friend, Jade (Alexandra Jensen), Riley (Joe Bird); Jade’s younger brother, and Sue (Miranda Otto), Jade’s mom. On the anniversary of the death of her mother, Mia takes the leap into the unknown by holding the hand, and recites, “Talk to Me.”
Every horror filmmaker strives to outdo their competitors with blood, gore, and disturbing scenes. The Philippo brothers are no exception. The nauseating scene with the dog exceeded the ick factor level of bad taste.
In theaters now, “Talk to Me” also stars Marcus Johnson, Kidaan Zelleke, James Oliver, and Zoe Terakes.
‘The Haunted Mansion’
Inspired by the theme park attraction, Walt Disney Pictures’ “Haunted Mansion” tells the tale of Gabbie (Rosario Dawson) and her adorable son (Chase W. Dillon) having a faceoff with ghosts. Gabbie inherited the haunted mansion and has to rid it of the “Uninvited.” However, the scariest faction of the ghostbusting team is Tiffany Haddish, who plays Harriet.
Haddish’s rumored involvement in a child abuse case last year sent shock waves throughout the industry. She even told TMZ she lost all her jobs. With a starring role in a Disney child-friendly film, and with more offers coming in, her future doesn’t appear to be that ominous.
The ghostbusting team also consists of the likable astrophysicist Ben (LaKeith Stanfield), the annoying shady priest (Owen Wilson), and the irascible professor Danny DeVito. “Haunted Mansion” is not expected to be scary, but the hope was it would at least be as funny as the original “Ghostbusters.” Plus, “Haunted Mansion” is much too long.
In theaters now, “Haunted Mansion” also stars Jared Leto, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Dan Levy.
