Florida A&M Board of Trustees calls timeout on new men’s basketball coach hire

New Florida A&M men’s basketball coach Patrick Crarey II will have to wait — for now — to assume duties just mere months after being hired.

That’s because the school’s board of trustees voted to table a contract agreement for Crarey, who was hired in April, until August, as reported by WCTV in Tallahassee.

The board of trustees had concerns regarding Crarey coaching student athletes before his contract was approved. FAMU athletic director Tiffani-Dawn Sykes noted that coaching out of season is not a violation of NCAA policy, due to Crarey signing a volunteer employee agreement ahead of the official contract.

Sykes also warned the board against putting the Rattlers further behind in the rebuilding process coming off a 6-23 season.

“There are things like scheduling, securing travel, travel contracts, ordering equipment, awarding scholarships—there’s really everything, and right now, the men’s basketball staff is without,” she said.

University President Larry Robinson can still sign Crarey to a 1-year contract on July 1, though Crarey will continue to work through his volunteer agreement until a resolution is reached.

The Rattlers have not had a winning season since a MEAC championship won in 2007.
