Former NBA guard Bonzi Wells named new head basketball coach at LeMoyne-Owen College

Former 10-year NBA veteran Bonzi Wells has accepted the position of head coach of the LeMoyne-Owen Magicians basketball team becoming the fourth head coach in the program’s history.

Wells played his college ball at Ball State University where he was named MAC Conference Player of the Year twice averaging 21.4 points, 7.3 rebounds and 3.0 steals for his career.

He transitioned to the NBA where he was selected 11th overall in the 1998 NBA Draft by the Detroit Pistons later traded to the Portland Trail Blazers.

He went on to play 10 seasons in the NBA with the Blazers, Memphis Grizzlies, Houston Rockets, Sacramento Kings and New Orleans Hornets. In 591 career games, Wells averaged 12.1 points and 4.6 rebounds.

Wells will take over a LeMoyne-Owen basketball team that is moving forward from the previous coach, William Anderson, who served in that role for the past 11 years.

While the Magicians have finished with a losing record in three of the last four seasons, they have done well in conference tournaments finishing as runner-ups in two of the last five.
