Four N. C. A&T track athletes advance to next round of U.S. Olympic Trials

EUGENE, Ore. – All four North Carolina A&T track and field Aggies who competed at the 2021 U.S. Olympic Trials on Friday at Hayward Field qualified for the next round.

Two of those Aggies won their respective heats. One of those Aggies had the fastest qualifying time of the day. Even though Kayla White, the 2019 NCAA indoor champion in the 200 meters, did not win her heat, she did have the third-fastest qualifying time in the 100m.

The other three other Aggies off to the next round of the Trials are 400m runners Trevor Stewart and Randolph Ross Jr., and sprinter Cambrea Sturgis qualified for the next round in the 100m.

Stewart got the day started for the N.C. A&T Olympic hopefuls by running a 44.75 in the first heat of the 400m. It was the fastest 400m qualifying time of the day. Stewart outlasted 400m NCAA indoor champion Noah Williams who ran a 45.21.

Ross Jr. finished third in his 400m heat after running a 45.61 in the third heat. Ross, the 2021 400m NCAA outdoor national champion, had the 13th-fastest time. The 400m semifinal is scheduled for 10:35 Eastern Standard Time, Saturday.

In the women’s 100m, White, who runs for Nike, ran a season-best 10.99. White finished second in her heat behind fellow Nike athlete Javianne Oliver who ran a 10.96. Sturgis won her heat in 11.15 for the 12th-fastest 100m time on the day.

The semifinals for the women’s 100m is 9:30 p.m.
