Ghana Is Great, But Here Are 6 African Countries You Also Need To Visit

As the year comes to a close many travelers are making the final descent to Ghana for the conclusion of the ‘Year of Return’ — an initiative by the president of Ghana marking a major milestone in the sordid history of Black slavery. From historic sites, to festivals such as Afro Nation and Afrochella and parties galore, it’s guaranteed to cause FOMO for anyone missing out on the experience.

But the excitement of the ‘Year of Return’ marks an opportunity to explore a whole continent of natural wonders, ancient cities, gorgeous beaches and breathtaking scenery. For those wondering where’s next, or planning a trip their next trip Africa, make sure to add at least some of the following destinations to the list to see some of the most beautiful and unique sights that Africa has to offer.

Nairobi, Kenya

Kenya

There’s a reason they call Kenya “magical.” As East Africa’s No. 1 travel destination (nearly 1.5 million international visitors in 2017) the country offers something for everyone. Travelers can not only visit the Masai Mara and the Serengeti, but experience mountain trekking, nightlife, a renowned art & culture scene, and of course — world-class safaris.

Merzouga, Sahara desert, Morocco, North Africa

Morocco

Have you seen traveler pictures on the ‘gram lately? Morocco should be on everyone’s travel bucket list. Rich culture, ancient cities and desert landscapes as far as the eyes can see — it’s a dream. But also, Morocco is incredibly diverse. Adventurer at heart? Then try canyoning and rock climbing in the Atlas mountains. A beach-lover? There’s sun and surf aplenty along Morocco’s extensive coastline.

Namibia, Etosha, Halali Camp

Namibia

From wildlife spotting in Etosha National Park to ghost hunting in Kolmanskop, Namibia will easily become your new favorite place. Easily a hidden gem among other frequently visited African countries, people don’t realize that Namibia has much to be discovered with top sites such as the Caprivi Strip, Sossusvlei, Skeleton Coast Park, and the capital city of Windhoek.

Tanzania

Tanzania, home to Mount Kilimanjaro, is probably the best place in the world to go on safari. Not to mention, Zanzibar is surrounded by some of the best beaches in the world. Forreal. With this destination you’ll get the best of both worlds — and the culture and nightlife to match either one of your preferences!

Victoria Falls at Zambezi river, Zimbabwe in Southern Africa.

Zimbabwe

For frequent travelers of South Africa, consider visiting its neighboring sister country of Zimbabwe, which is just a short flight away. Hwange National Park is the largest reserve in the country and home to the largest surviving wild-dog population on the planet. And Victoria Falls is a must-visit, as the largest waterfall in the world. You can even seek a thrill by hanging over the cliff’s edge at the “Devil’s Pool.”

The market at the entrance to the Shoa Gate, one of six gates leading into the walled city of Harar, Ethiopia, Africa.

Ethiopia

Ethiopia is located in the ‘Horn of Africa’ along the northeast region of the continent and contains more than 70% of Africa’s mountains. Addis Ababa, the flourishing capital of Ethiopia offers a variety of authentic restaurants, theaters and the burial grounds of Emperor Selassie I. Traveling to Ethiopia serves as the gateway to all history lessons and books documenting the history of this amazing country, and you will have a front row seat, experiencing this joyous cultural ride.
