HBCU women’s basketball teams land spots in Mid-Major Top 25 Poll

The most recent Women’s Mid-Major Top 25 poll was released this week, and two HBCUs were among the ranked teams.

SWAC leader Jackson State and Norfolk State, which has the best record in the MEAC, are included in the poll.

No.16 Jackson State

Winners of 13 straight games, Coach Tomekia Reed’s Tigers have the best overall record in the SWAC at 18-6, including a 60-56 over St. John’s of the Big East. So far this season, Jackson State has run through the SWAC, remaining unblemished with a 13-0 record, and has posted an average margin of victory in conference play of 20.3 points; their closet margin of victory in SWAC competition being a 71-63 win over Grambling on Feb. 3 and 63-58 victory over Southern on Feb. 5. Up next for Jackson State is a road game against Alcorn State on Feb. 24.

No. 17 Norfolk State

The Spartans are ranked 17th in the latest poll, moving up two spots from the previous week. The Spartans have the best record in the MEAC at 19-5, recording wins over William & Mary, Drexel, Radford, and Appalachian State.

At 8-1 and winner of seven consecutive games, the Lady Spartans are currently perched at the summit at the MEAC, with wins last week including an 87-25 obliteration of South Carolina State on Feb. 17 and a 72-44 victory over North Carolina Central on Feb. 19. The Spartans return to action on Saturday against Coppin State.

The Women’s Mid-Major Top 25 is in its 14th year of existence and is voted on by 31 Division I coaches.
