Howard coach Larry Scott recently turned down an offer from Nick Saban

Before ever coaching his first game at Howard, Larry Scott was being sought after by the current College Football Playoff national champions.

As first reported by longtime NFL reporter Jim Trotter, Scott, who will be entering his first season at the helm at Howard, turned down an offer earlier this month to join Alabama as an assistant on Nick Saban’s coaching staff.

Scott was hired by Howard last February but hasn’t officially coached a game due to the MEAC’s decision to cancel fall sports competition because of COVID-19 concern.

Scott was previously an assistant for several schools at the FBS-level, including Miami, Tennessee, South Florida and Florida.

At MEAC Media Day recently, Scott spoke at length regarding how appreciative he was that Howard chose him to lead its football program.

“To have an opportunity to be here at Howard is one of those – kind of a deals where you pinch yourself and go ‘oh man, now you’re a part of that culture,” said Scott. “You’re knee-deep in the culture.’ you get a chance to bring on some of the expertise and experiences that you’ve had along your coaching ladder and the stops that you’ve made in this coaching world, and going to school and actually bring it home and bring it back to the HBCU.”

Scott and Howard open the 2021 spring season on Feb.27 versus Morgan State.
