*After carving a trail of destruction across the eastern Caribbean, Hurricane Beryl, which reached a historic peak as the earliest Category 5 hurricane in the Atlantic, has weakened significantly. As it churned over open waters toward Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula on Thursday, Beryl was downgraded to a Category 2 storm by the afternoon.

Beryl’s fearsome path left at least nine people dead and prompted widespread evacuations and damage assessments in affected areas. The storm’s center was approximately 215 miles east-southeast of Tulum, Mexico, by Thursday afternoon, packing maximum sustained winds of 110 mph and moving west-northwest at 20 mph.

Jack Beven, a senior hurricane specialist at the U.S. Hurricane Center, commented on the current status of the storm, stating: “The biggest immediate threat now that the storm is moving away from the Cayman Islands is landfall in the Yucatan Peninsula.”

Forecasts indicate that while Beryl is expected to bring heavy rain and moderate winds to Mexico’s Caribbean coast, the storm will likely restrengthen once it crosses the Yucatan Peninsula and enters the Gulf of Mexico.

Meteorologists warn this could lead to a second, potentially more robust landfall in northeast Mexico.

In the midst of the storm’s turmoil, actress Sheryl Lee Ralph took to Twitter to express her gratitude for narrowly avoiding direct impact. Ralph, who is currently in Jamaica for her son’s wedding, shared a heartfelt message.

“It looks like Hurricane Beryl has passed and is running like a Jamaican track star off to another race! Thank you all for your good vibes and prayers. We did not get a direct hit and we are grateful but Carriacou needs help.”

Sheryl Lee Ralph isn’t the only person in Jamaica who’s thankful to be safe in the wake of Beryl. Residents in downtown Kingston were seen celebrating by dancing and … umm, err, gettin’ busy with each other (with clothes on) in the streets, turning the storm into an impromptu x-rated party in the streets. Watch below.

As recovery efforts begin in the Caribbean, those in Beryl’s projected path brace themselves for potential impacts. Authorities continue to monitor the storm’s progression and urge residents to stay informed and prepared.
