Jackson State draws Baylor in NCAA Tournament opening round

Jackson State survived a grueling SWAC Tournament and will be rewarded with a date against Baylor in the NCAA Tournament.

The Tigers, a No. 15 seed in the women’s tournament, will face a Bears’ opponent riding a 17-game winning streak.

But JSU is up for the challenge against a Baylor team that finished the season 25-2 overall and won the Big 12 championship.

“I’m extremely excited,” JSU head coach Tomekia Reed said. “We were watching and looking at all the No. 1 seeds, trying to see who we were going to play. To see we’re not going to play the No. 1 seed was even more exciting. I think there’s some level of respect there.”

“I can remember recording, and I said, ‘Y’all, I think they forgot us,’” Reed said before laughing. “‘We won, we’ve clinched our bid so we should have an automatic spot, I think they forgot about us.’ Then, everybody started laughing and said, ‘No, Coach. We’re a higher seed,’ and I said, ‘Well, come on with it.’”

The SWAC champions will play Baylor at 3 p.m. Sunday.
