Jackson State receives portion of $1 million donation from Charles Barkley

The foundation of Hall of Fame basketball player and NBA commentatorCharles Barkley has given Jackson State the first $100,000 of a $1 million gift.

Back in December, the two-time Olympic Gold Medalist and current co-host of Inside the NBA pledged $1 million each to Bethune-Cookman and Jackson State.

“We are grateful to Mr. Charles Barkley for making this generous investment into Jackson State University,” said JSU acting President Elayne Hayes-Anthony. “It is transformative to have leaders, like Mr. Barkley, recognize the important work we’re doing and decide to sow into our mission to prepare students for the global workforce. This is a fantastic way to close out the fiscal year, and his pledge of $100,000 annually for the next ten years will provide a continuous resource to support institutional priorities at a greater level and to further carry out our strategic plan to elevate this great institution.”

JSU officials told WJTV in Jackson that this initial installment will be used to support several projects at the university.

Donating to HBCUs is nothing new for Barkley. In 2017, he pledged $1 million to Morehouse College. In 2020, Barkley donated $1 million to both Miles College and Tuskegee University.
