James Earl Jones, the iconic and beloved actor with an especially distinctive voice, has died. He was 93.

Widely known as the voice of “Star Wars” villain Darth Vader and King Mufasa in Disney’s “The Lion King”, Jones cemented himself as a legend in the film, television and theater industry.

In fact, Jones is an EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, Tony) winner – a status only reached by few stars.

With a career spanning six decades, Jones has amassed over 150 film and TV credits. Notable titles include: “Coming to America,” “Dr. Strangelove,” “Field of Dreams,” “The Sandlot,” “Conan the Barbarian,” “The Hunt for Red October,” “Roots,” “The Atlanta Child Murders,” “L.A. Law,” and more.

The entertainment titan made his debut on Broadway in the late 1950’s at the Cort Theatre, which was renamed in 2022 to the James Earl Jones Theatre.

His two Tony Awards came in 1969 for his role in “The Great White Hope” and in 1987 for originating the role of Troy Maxson in August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning drama “Fences.”

His distinct voice was always felt whenever heard. Jones evoked emotion even through the narration of several documentaries, including “Malcom X” in 1972 and the Disneynature doc “Earth” in 2007.

Additionally, the legend notoriously announced the tagline “This is CNN” for the cable news channel.

Some other special recognitions include a Kennedy Center Honor in 2002 and the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement award in 2009.

James Earl Jones will always be remembered as a pioneering Black actor, who inspired generations with his versatility and prolific talent.

TV One joins the world in mourning the loss of a giant. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, loved ones, and all who have been and will be impacted by his legendary work.
