When Jean Drummond was born, doctors predicted she would not walk. “I’m running now and have not stopped,” Drummond laughs. She calls herself “a third-generation female entrepreneur.” Her grandmother, Estelle Younger, once owned a general merchandise business. Her mother, Sallie Younger Crowder, started her own business after Drummond was born. Drummond followed tradition by launching HealthCare Dynamics International (HCDI), a healthcare quality improvement and transformation firm. She established
HCDI in 1991 after a successful career as a practicing clinician.
Drummond received her undergraduate degree as a physician’s assistant from Howard University and her Master’s in Public Administration in Healthcare Management from Bowie State University. “Without question, the number and scope of responsibilities of my role as president and founder are enormous. I find success in managing multiple competing tasks,” she shares.
She aims to make healthcare programs understandable. ”Healthcare public policy is laden with legislative speech that is often misunderstood and peculiar to the general public.
HCDI’s approach focuses on developing plain language content that reflects culturally competent and human-centered approaches,” she explains. “Our work begins with a listening ear and an open heart.”
Drummond has several goals. She offers, “Our commitment to drive value-based care coupled with provider, person, and community engagement remains a high priority.” She established the nonprofit Institute for Creative Community Initiatives to empower youth, adults, and families in vulnerable communities. It addresses physical and mental health and overall well-being through innovative and sustainable strategies that focus on providing community support and adopting healthy lifestyles.
Drummond, a devout mother of three sons and wife to U.S. Air Force veteran Jimmie Drummond Jr., M.D., has further charitable dreams. She wants to one day open “Dove House” to offer free housing to single parents while they get back on their feet by assisting with cooking meals, cleaning, and other services.
