John Amos, ‘Good Times’ and ‘Coming to America’ Star, Dies at 84

John Amos, the Emmy-nominated actor revered as one of the most treasured TV dads, has died. He was 84.

While news of his death was just made public, Amos passed away on August 21, according to reports.

His son Kelly Christopher confirmed his passing in a statement to People, saying “he was a man with the kindest heart and a heart of gold.”

“Many fans consider him their TV father… He lived a good life… He was my dad, my best friend, and my hero,” Kelly added.

Amos was best known for his roles on Good TimesComing to America and Roots (Kunta Kinte), which earned him his Emmy nomination and NAACP Image Award.

He was born in Newark, NJ and was introduced to stardom via the NFL as a player on the Denver Broncos in 1964. He also spent time with the Kansas City Chiefs.

The legendary actor made his television debut with an appearance on The Cosby Show, before landing his breakout role the Mary Tyler Moore Show as Gordy.

In 1974, Good Times premiered with Amos starring as James Evans Sr. He was integral to the show’s success in allowing Black families to see themselves on-screen and teaching valuable lessons that would stick with viewers forever.

Earlier this year, TV One celebrated the 50th Anniversary of Good Times with exclusive interviews featuring his beloved “Evans children”: Ralph Carter, Bern Nadette Stanis and Jimmie Walker.

Amos’ career continued for four decades, as he appeared on numerous shows and movies.

Some notable titles include: Hunter704 Hauser, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, The DistrictThe AndersonsThe West Wing, Men in Trees and The Righteous Gemstones, to name a few.

As his son shared: “his legacy will live on in his outstanding works in television and film as an actor.”

His impact on the industry and generations of Black actors who came behind him, will never be forgotten.
