In a recent interview, Kim Fields reveals why fans of the classic 90s sitcom, Living Single, didn’t see much of her titular character in the final season.

“My life at that moment was not what you would expect. I left Living Single a few episodes shy of completing the final season, because the work, the process, and everything else didn’t feel the same for me,” the 52-year-old actress told Bustle. “I was at that point either divorced, or about to be divorced. I started a production company, and we had all these great projects but no deals.”

The Tyler Perry’s House of Payne director said that although she didn’t “claim depression,” in retrospect it became clear that “there was a little bit of that there.”

“I went through a stage where I completely shut down,” she recalled. “I had these blackout drapes in my house, and I closed the drapes and stayed in the bed for about two weeks, maybe longer.”

“I didn’t claim depression,” added the Harlem native, “but if I’m being real with myself, I’m sure there was a little bit of that there.”

Starring opposite Mike Epps and Wanda Sykes in her latest Netflix series The Upshaws, Fields “wasn’t checking to do another sitcom” but “the tone of the show and the character felt like uncharted waters.”

With over four decades of experience under her belt, Fields is hoping to discover new parts of herself within familiar territory and expanding on her craft as an overall artist.
