*It isn’t looking to start a new basketball league, but Netflix is pulling the likes of LeBron James and Anthony Edwards for its new sports series “Starting 5.”
Media sources at Revolt report the 10-episode show, which the streamer announced on Aug. 28, will center around a quintet of NBA superstars as they navigate their lives within and out of the world of pro basketball.
In addition to James and Edwards, “Starting 5” will feature Jimmy Butler, Domantas Sabonis, and Jayson Tatum.
“Ever wonder how the best athletes in the world maintain their bodies and balance their personal lives throughout a grueling NBA season?” the series’ official press release stated.
“Though they share a common goal of winning the NBA championship, each athlete is at a different point in their career, trying to lead their teams to victory while navigating their own respective journey.”
Directed by Susan Ansman, Trishtan Williams, and Peter J. Scalettar, “Starting 5” boasts a lineup of supporters that include former president, Barack Obama, former first lady Michelle Obama, and NFL legend Peyton Manning as well as sports-marketing businessman Maverick Carter, actor Jamal Henderson, Showtime Networks Inc. Executive Vice President, Nonfiction Programming Vinnie Malhotra and internet personality Sam Pepper.
In its description of the 10–episode show, the release touched on the strengths and motivations of its cast to their teams in their respective quests for the top spot.
“James exerts himself harder than ever to stay healthy – and dominant – in his 21st season, while Edwards electrifies with his rapid rise,” the press release mentioned about the NBA standouts, while stating how “Butler’s relentless drive propels the [Miami Heat], Sabonis anchors the [Sacramento Kings] with his versatile play, and Tatum leads the [Boston Celtics] in their quest for a record 18th championship. ‘Starting 5’ delivers an unfiltered view of life at the pinnacle of professional basketball.”
The arrival of “Starting 5” comes after James, Tatum, and Edwards went international to compete in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris as part of the U.S. men’s basketball team.
The all-star roster captured the gold after a close game against France, a team that featured fellow NBA players Victor Wembanyama, Nicolas Batum, Evan Fournier, and Rudy Gobert, noted Revolt.
Netflix’s “Starting 5” will start streaming Oct. 9.
