MEAC issues fine against N. Carolina A&T’s Sam Washington for critical comments

North Carolina A&T head football coach Sam Washington was fined by the MEAC on Wednesday for “making public comments critical of officials,” following the Aggies’ 34-31 loss to FAMU last Sunday.

The announcement comes one day after the conference suspended a total of three players from both teams for being involved in an altercation just before the start of the second half.

“Per conference policy, members of the coaching staff, student-athletes or other representatives of participating institutions shall not make public statements critical of officiating in any MEAC contests or events,” the conference stated in its release. “First-time offenders are fined $500. A second offense comes with a $1,000 fine, and a third offense results in a $2,000 fine for the institution.”

According to the Greensboro News & Record, Washington apologized for the incident on Monday.

“First of all, I just want to apologize to everyone,” Washington said at the football team’s weekly news conference. “And I promise you we will get this taken care of, and it will never happen again.”

The Aggies (4-2, 2-1 MEAC) host Howard (1-6, 1-2 MEAC) Saturday at 1 p.m. ET.
