Bethune-Cookman 62, Maryland Eastern Shore 53
PRINCESS ANNE, Md. — Amaya Scott double-doubled with 22 points and 10 rebounds as Bethune-Cookman won its 10th straight with a 62-53 victory at Maryland-Eastern Shore Saturday afternoon.
The junior was 10-for-11 from the field as she finished one point shy of her career-high in recording her sixth double-double of the season and third in the past five games.
Daniella Hatcher added 11 as the Lady Wildcats, who trailed 32-29 at halftime, used a 12-1 run to turn a 37-36 deficit into a 49-40 lead at the end of the third quarter. UMES (5-18, 2-8 MEAC) made just three of 17 field goal attempts in the period.
Ciara Thompson had five points for B-CU, Kiana Williams four points, five rebounds and seven assists and Ashanti Hunt seven rebounds.
Adrienne Jones scored 13 points for the Lady Hawks, who used a 6-0 run to take the halftime lead.
Coppin State 61, South Carolina State 42
ORANGEBURG, S.C. — Coppin State’s Chance Graham scored a game-high 21 points while making 10 of 14 free throws in a 61-42 victory at South Carolina State on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles have now won two-straight games.
Oluwadamilola Oloyede was also in double figures for Coppin, finishing with 12 points while Alexandria Hamilton added nine points off the bench.
The Eagles led 14-13 after the first quarter, closing the period on a 10-2 run. They outscored South Carolina State, 19-9 in the second to take a 33-22 lead to the half. After laying virtually even in the third quarter, Coppin pulled away in the fourth quarter, outscoring the hosts 13-6.
Jacquese Alston scored 11 points to lead the Bulldogs.
Delaware State 61, Florida A&M 53
DOVER, Del. — Delaware State won on Saturday against conference opponent Florida A&M, 61-53.
The Lady Hornets improved to 11-12 overall and 7-3 in the MEAC. This is the best start for Delaware State in the MEAC since the 2008-09 season when that team went 11-2 to start conference play.
The Lady Hornets also snapped a nine-game losing streak to the Rattlers, defeating Florida A&M for the first time since a 57-53 victory during the 2012-13 campaign. The Lady Hornets topped the Rattlers in Memorial Hall for the first time since the 2008-09 season.
Tierra Floyd stuffed the stat sheet with a team-high 13 points, five rebounds, five steals and three blocks. DeMaurea Moore and Lyric Turner scored nine points each.
Florida A&M made just 22 of 56 shots (39.3 percent), including 5 of 19 (26.3 percent) from beyond the arc.
Shalaunda Burney-Robinson has 26 points and 21 rebounds for the Lady Rattlers, both game-highs.
Norfolk State 64, Morgan State 57
NORFOLK, Va. — Norfolk State defeated Morgan State 64-57 on Saturday evening in Echols Hall, taking a late lead following La’Deja James’ go-ahead layup with 1:28 left in the game.
With the win, the Spartans 9-1 conference record is now their best 10-game start since joining the MEAC.
Both teams entered the final quarter with the score tied 48-48. It was a back-and-forth quarter, with the Bears (12-13, 8-4 MEAC) taking a 56-54 lead following a Chelsea Mitchell jumper with 3:25 left in regulation. Following a Mikaela Jones free-throw, the Spartans (15-8, 9-1 MEAC) forced a turnover on the next Morgan State possession.
James answered with a layup to put the Spartans up 57-56 with 1:28 left in regulation, a lead Norfolk State would not relinquish the rest of the game.
The Spartans had three scorers in double-figures, with James’ 22 points leading the way. Chanette Hicks finished with 13 points while adding three rebounds, six assists, and five steals. Blaire Thomas scored 16 and came away with six rebounds.
Mikaela Jones was just shy of a double-double, with eight points and nine rebounds.
North Carolina Central 86, North Carolina A&T State 80 (2 OT)
GREENSBORO, N.C. — After missing potential game-winning shots in the final seconds of regulation and the first overtime, North Carolina Central finally pulled away for an 86-80 double-overtime win over host and archrival North Carolina A&T State Saturday afternoon in the Corbett Sports Center.
The Eagles received big performances from their top three scorers.
Junior guard Kieche White led NCCU with a season-high scoring performance for a second straight contest, bucketing 27 points. White made half of her field goal attempts (9-for-18) and 70 percent (7-for-10) of her free-throw attempts, including two free throws with 3:17 left in the second overtime to push the Eagles ahead for good.
Freshman wing Anissa Rivera filled up the box score, tallying a career-high 26 points to go along with 12 rebounds, five steals, and four blocks. Senior forward Paulina Afriyie also netted a double-double with 17 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.
Cinia McCray led the Aggies with 22 points, including four 3-pointers. Junior Deja Winters made a game-high five 3-pointers on the way to 19 points. Jayla Jones-Pack was a third double-digit scorer for the Aggies with 10 points.
