Morehouse hires former Atlanta Falcons star as head coach

The Morehouse Maroon Tigers have hired a coach with NFL ties.

The school announced Friday that former NFL All-Pro talent Terance Mathis will be their next head football coach.

Mathis was an All-American with wide receiver at the out of the University of New Mexico. He was later  taken in the sixth round of the 1990 NFL Draft by the New York Jets.

Mathis played four seasons with the Jets before transitioning to the Atlanta Falcons and became a breakout star.

In his first season with the team in 1994, he was named to the Pro Bowl and was All-Pro Second Team.

He finished with 111 receptions for 1,342 receiving yards and scored 11 touchdowns.

Mathis went on to play seven seasons for the Falcons before ending his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2002. He ended his career with 689 receptions for 8,809 receiving yards and 63 touchdowns.

Mathis returns to the SIAC where he began his coaching career as an offensive coordinator with Savannah State.

Morehouse is his first head coaching job at the collegiate level.
