Norfolk State women hoops featured on city transit train

The Norfolk State women’s basketball team is riding high off their MEAC championship win and celebrating the occasion significantly.

At a ceremony celebrating their conference title, the team was surprised by a local public transportation company commemorating their accomplishment.

In association with Hampton Roads Transit (HRT), a rail train was designed especially for the team decked out with a photo of their championship roster and a message saying, “Congratulations on a great season.”

Norfolk State finished the regular season with the best record in the conference going 26-7. Head coach Larry Vickers was named the MEAC Coach of the Year, while Spartans’ guard Camille Downs was named MEAC Defensive Player of the Year.

After dispatching South Carolina State and North Carolina Central in the first two rounds of the MEAC tournament, the Spartans secured a spot in their second straight title game in a rematch against Howard.

This time, the Spartans were victorious, defeating the Bison 56-52 to win their first MEAC tournament since 2002.
