Pittsburgh Steelers sign Virginia State running back to free-agent contract

Former Virginia State running back Darius Hagans was signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers to a one-year, $750,000 contract Monday.

In 2022, Hagans rushed for 1,012 yards for the Trojans, garnering All-CIAA First Team honors. Hagans was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Indianapolis Colts shortly after the 2023 NFL Draft.

Hagans, who measures 5-foot-11 and 207 pounds, put himself on the NFL radar with his performance at the HBCU Combine in February, where he ran a 4.48 in the 40-yard dash and jumped 36.5 inches in the vertical leap. When the Colts cut Hagans last week, the Steelers wasted little time in signing the former Trojan.

The indications from Steelers beat writer Nick Farabaugh is that Hagans will compete for the third-string position on the depth chart. Hagans joins Morgan State’s Alfonzo Graham as HBCU running backs on the Steelers roster.
