Prairie View pauses football activities, postpones next two games after program hit with COVID

Prairie View is the latest FCS school to be impacted by the effects of COVID-19.

The program announced Tuesday that it is pausing all football activities due to what is being described as COVID issues and subsequent quarantine.

As a result, the Panthers’ next two games versus Alabama A&M (Saturday) and Jackson State (March 28), have been postponed.

A makeup date for the contests has not been determined.

Beyond the two games officially postponed, the Panthers are scheduled to host Southern on April 10.

For Alabama A&M, it is the second game this season the team has lost on its schedule due to an opponent being impacted by the virus.

As for JSU, they face the prospect of also losing its second SWAC game on its conference-high seven-game slate after a date with Mississippi Valley State was nixed because of positive tests among the Delta Devils.

Prior to the start of the 2021 spring season, the Bulldogs’ home opener versus Alcorn State was canceled after the Braves chose — two weeks before the season — to not compete because of its own coronavirus issues.

Alabama A&M then was faced with another postponement because of COVID issues impacting Mississippi Valley State which led to the Bulldogs scheduling South Carolina State to compensate for the lost conference matchup.

Alabama A&M head coach Connell Maynor said recently that he expected additional games through the shortened season to be affected by positive tests.

“I do anticipate probably somebody else having to postpone a game or even cancel a game before the end of this season,” he said. “Any given day somebody can get it and you could have one of those situations (where) it could be us. It could be whomever.”
