Prairie View’s tops Alabama A&M 69-54, secures first place in SWAC

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — The Prairie View A&M men’s basketball team used an explosive second-half surge to take down Alabama A&M 69-54 in a Southwestern Athletic Conference matchup Monday evening in T.M. Elmore Gymnasium.

Down 29-26 at the break — Prairie View A&M trailed by as many as 11 in the first half — the Panthers (11-11, 7-2 SWAC) took control right out of the gate of the second half, as senior Gerard Andrus keyed a 20-7 Panthers run to open the period. Andrus scored eight points during the fray as Prairie View A&M took a 46-36 lead with just over 12 minutes to play.

The Bulldogs managed to respond with an 8-3 run to cut the Panthers lead to five, but senior Darius Williams quelled that rally with a jumper, and Andrus followed with a layup to give Prairie View A&M a nine-point cushion with 6:59 left.

The Panthers continued to stay in control from there, as D. Williams knocked down a pair of free throws to push the Panthers’ lead to double-digits with 4:06 remaining, and senior Devonte Patterson followed suit to add to Prairie View A&M’s advantage.

From there, the Panthers cruised, leading by at least 13 the rest of the way.

Andrus led the Panthers with 20 points — 12 in the second half — on 6-of-7 shooting. D. Williams and Patterson added 12 points each.

Prairie View A&M held Alabama A&M to a 29.3 percent shooting clip (17-of-58) and the Panthers bench outscored the Bulldogs’ reserves 26-8.

Garrett Hicks led Alabama A&M with 16 points.
