*The 2024 Paris Olympic Games caused controversy with an opening ceremony segment featuring drag queens and transexual performers mocking Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper.”

This depiction, seen as offensive by some, led a restaurant group in Columbus, Ohio, to announce it would not show the Olympics at any of its establishments.

“We are protesting the 2024 Paris Olympics. The Portrayal of The Last Supper was handled with an irresponsible level of irreverence, insulting the Christian faith,” the restaurant group said on social media.

“We unapologetically uphold a standard where all religions, races, sexual orientations, national origins, disabilities, ages, and gender identities are respected. We will not tolerate any form of discrimination of desecration. Therefore, we will not be broadcasting the Olympic Games at any of our restaurants.”

The affected restaurants reportedly include Townhall, Rebol, Mandrake, and Green Goat.

According to some reports, the opening ceremony wasn’t a parody of The Last Supper. Rather, it was a homage to the Festival of Dionysus, the Greek god of fertility, wine, and revelry. The controversial segment left organizers apologizing, Complex reports.

Paris 2024 spokesperson Anne Descamps said, “Clearly there was never an intention to show disrespect to any religious group. On the contrary, I think [with the ceremony’s artistic director] Thomas Jolly, we really did try to celebrate community tolerance.

Descamps added, “Looking at the result of the polls that we shared, we believe that this ambition was achieved. If people have taken any offense we are, of course, really, really sorry.”

She continued, “My wish isn’t to be subversive, nor to mock or to shock,” Jolly told the Associated Press. “Most of all, I wanted to send a message of love, a message of inclusion and not at all to divide.”

Meanwhile, French DJ and activist Barbara Butch, a performer from the LGBTQ+ community, revealed that she had filed multiple police reports after receiving death threats related to her participation in an Olympics opening ceremony tableau.

She shared a statement from her attorney on her Instagram account Monday that said Butch has been “the target of an extremely violent campaign of cyber-harassment and defamation.”

The statement continued, “She has been threatened with death, torture and rape, and has also been the target of numerous antisemitic, homophobic, sexist and grossophobic insults. Barbara Butch condemns this vile hatred directed at her, what she represents and what she stands for. She is today filing several complaints against these acts, whether committed by French nationals or foreigners, and intends to prosecute anyone who tries to intimidate her in the future.”
