*We caught up with Ruby Rose Turner, Dara Renee, and Morgan Dudley to discuss their roles in “Descendants: The Rise of Red” on Disney+.
As part of the cast bringing this beloved franchise to life, they shared insights into their characters and teased what fans can expect from this latest “Descendants” franchise entry.
“I play Bridget. I play the young version of the Queen of Hearts. Her journey throughout this is really showing the audience how she came to be, how she is now, and really explores her heart and her morals and how she handles things,” Turner explained to EURweb exclusively. “It was really exciting to be able to play her.”
Directed by Jennifer Phang, with a script from Dan Frey and Russell Sommer, here’s the synopsis: “Descendants: The Rise of Red” follows the story of Red, the rebellious daughter of the Queen of Hearts, and Chloe, Cinderella’s perfectionist daughter. When the tyrannical Queen of Hearts incites a coup against Auradon, polar opposites Red and Chloe must join forces and travel back in time to undo the traumatic event that set Red’s mother down her villainous path.

Disney’s “Descendants: The Rise of Red” is a musical fantasy film starring “a new ensemble of Villain Kids (VKs) and legacy characters, including Kylie Cantrall as Red,Malia Baker as Chloe, Brandy as Cinderella, Rita Ora as the Queen of Hearts, Dara Reneé as Ursula’s sister Uliana, Ruby Rose Turner as Bridget/Young Queen of Hearts, Morgan Dudley as Ella/Young Cinderella, Joshua Colley as Young Hook, Peder Lindell as Morgie, Grace Narducci as Fay/Young Fairy Godmother, Jeremy Swift as Principal Merlin, Paolo Montalban as King Charming, and Leonardo Nam as Maddox Hatter. China Anne McClain is back as fan-favorite Uma and the new principal at Auradon Prep. Melanie Paxson also reprises her role as Fairy Godmother,” per the news release.
“I definitely studied every Ursula that existed, and I studied China Anne McClain as Uma religiously,” Reneé said.
“Literally watched every single movement and mannerism. So, it’s definitely, I mean, it’s a dream come true, being able to be a part of something that I love so much,” she shared.
Added Dudley, “I play Ella who’s the young Cinderella. I think her journey is just kind of like what it’s like to be a teenage Cinderella in my opinion, because there’s been a lot of iterations of Cinderella. We see Brandy’s take on Cinderella who’s just this graceful, literally the truest form of Cinderella in my opinion. I really get to explore what it’s like to kind of have the before that development.”
When asked if there were scenes that they found impactful or exciting to film, Renee said, “It’s definitely when someone, I’m not going to say who pushes Uliana in the water and she falls, and then she comes up as herself, and she’s looking around. I feel as though in that situation, I would have a panic attack, seeing all these people see me so vulnerable.”
She added, “So I feel like Uliana really was kind of questioning her reality and having anxiety and a panic attack. And then, that is what made her go the way she did. Instead of talking it out, which is something you should do, she was like, “The only way I need to do it is to make them fear me. I don’t care if they love me, they just can’t look at me as vulnerable.”
“Descendants: The Rise of Red” premieres Friday, July 12 exclusively on Disney+, followed by a special encore on Friday, Aug. 9, at 8:00 p.m. EDT/PDT on Disney Channel.
