Southern reportedly has interest in Marshall Faulk becoming next head coach

Another HBCU is reportedly considering an NFL Hall of Fame football player as its next head coach.

NFL Network senior reporter Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday that Southern and Marshall Faulk have “mutual interest” the job now vacated by Dawson Odums, who departed for Norfolk State last week.

Rapoport suggests that the move could signal the start of a trend of former NFL greats landing coaching positions at Black colleges in the vein of Deion Sanders at Jackson State and Eddie George at Tennessee State.

Faulk, a seven-time Pro Bowl selection, Super Bowl champion, and NFL MVP, does not have any formal coaching experience, though he is a New Orleans native, which would make him a viable candidate for the job.

Southern athletic director Roman Banks is expected to move quickly on naming a head coach.

During an appearance on “The Carlos Brown Show,” Banks said he’d hope to have a new coach in place by sometime this week.

“Well, to be honest, I’m hoping next week that we just start narrowing our candidate pool down, and we bring the final three to five — if that many or whatever is submitted we will bring them forward for a second interview,” he said. “I just think that it’s paramount by the end of the week that we have to get someone hired.”
